SANFORD NGOBOLA ISSUES A WARNING TO FORMER DEFENSE MINISTER GEOFFREY MWAMBA FOR NOT APPEARING BEFORE THE COURT

Former Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba

Lusaka resident magistrate, Sanford Ngobola has issued a warning to former defense Minister Geoffrey Mwamba that he will revoke his bail condition and remand him in custody if he continues to delay the case.

In this matter Mr. Mwamba is charged for Proceed of Crime Case involving two million dollars and 20 million Kwacha.

This follows the defense’s application to adjourn the matter as Mr. Mwamba is sick.

Making a ruling this morning after the defense applied for a seven days adjourned as the former defense Minister went for review at Medland Hospital, Magistrate Ngobola said adjournments are given at the discretion of the court.

The Magistrate said he was going to give an adjournment for not more than seven days as he wants progress to be made in the matter.

Magistrate Ngobola adjourned the matter to March 16 for Mr. Mwamba to open his defense in the matter.

In the application the defense informed the court that Mr. Mwamba is hypertension patient and went to hospital this morning where the doctor gave him a seven day bed rest.

The defense told the court that the accused person is ready to start his defense and would not like to delay the trial.

The defense assured the court that the application was made in good faith and will be ready to commence defense on March 16.

But the state expressed disappointment with the application made by the defense saying as the prosecution was ready for the case.

The state said they were hopeful that Mr. Mwamba was going to open his defense this morning but only to learn that he is sick.

The state further hoped that at the next stage the defense will be adequately prepared to start and conclude this matter.
