Kitwe, Zambia – On International Men’s Day, the Government, through the Gender Division, joined forces with UNFPA and SAT Zambia to host a media breakfast at Moba Hotel aimed at engaging men and boys in promoting gender equality and preventing Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Scores of men from across society attended the event, with Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Lawrence Mwanza officiating as Guest of Honour on behalf of Provincial Minister Elisha Matambo.
Speakers at the event included Ms. Nchimunya Nkombo, Director of Gender Rights Protection at the Gender Division; Jacob Makambwe, Chairperson of Men Engage Zambia Alliance; Itezhi-Tezhi MP Twaambo Mutinta; ZINGO Male Champion Sivers Hamukoma; and entrepreneur Dumisani Ncumbe.
In his keynote speech, Mr. Mwanza challenged men to take a leading role in building a safer and more just society free of GBV. “By speaking out against GBV and supporting survivors, we can work together to create a safer, more just society for all,” he said.
Ms. Nkombo also urged men and boys to actively support gender equality and the prevention of all forms of GBV.
The event concluded with a panel discussion themed “Inspiring Men and Boys to Take Proactive Action Against GBV and Support Women’s and Girls’ Rights,” highlighting the need for collective action to eliminate gender-based violence in Zambia.
