YWCA Zambia Condemns Sextortion Allegations and Mob Killing in Kalumbila

The Young Women’s Christian Association of Zambia has expressed grave concern over alleged cases of sextortion involving political party actors during the electoral period, alongside the recent mob killing of a woman in Kalumbila Town.

In a statement issued by Executive Director Regina Katongo, the organization strongly condemned both incidents, describing them as serious violations of human rights and a threat to democratic values and the rule of law.

Ms. Katongo said the association is particularly alarmed by reports that some individuals linked to political parties are exploiting vulnerable women and girls by demanding sexual favors in exchange for political support, adoption as candidates, or access to campaign resources.

She emphasized that such acts commonly referred to as sextortion constitute both corruption and gender-based violence.

“Political participation is a constitutional right that must be exercised freely, fairly, and without coercion or exploitation,” Ms. Katongo stated, warning that such misconduct erodes public trust in democratic institutions and discourages women from engaging in politics.

The organization has called on all political parties to take decisive action by enforcing zero-tolerance policies, strengthening accountability mechanisms, and ensuring that perpetrators are disciplined and reported to law enforcement agencies.

It further urged key institutions, including the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Zambia Police Service, to conduct thorough investigations and bring those responsible to justice.

Meanwhile, the YWCA also condemned the mob killing of a woman in Kalumbila Town, describing the act as barbaric and a gross violation of the victim’s right to life.

The association extended condolences to the victim’s family and called on the Zambia Police Service to carry out a prompt, impartial investigation to ensure accountability.

Ms. Katongo  further appealed to community leaders and residents to reject mob justice and instead promote lawful and peaceful conflict resolution. It emphasized the need for increased public awareness on due process and respect for human rights.

The organization noted that the incidents highlight the urgent need to strengthen efforts to combat gender-based violence and uphold the rule of law.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting women and girls and called on government, civil society, and citizens to work together toward a safer and more inclusive society.
