CEC Launches Anti-Vandalism Campaign to Protect Power Infrastructure

The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has launched a new community-focused campaign aimed at curbing the rising incidents of power cable theft and vandalism that threaten the reliability of electricity supply across the Copperbelt Province.

Titled “Help Protect Our Power Infrastructure, Preserve Our Community: Report Cable Theft & Vandalism Today!”, the campaign underscores the crucial role of public participation in safeguarding the region’s power assets and ensuring continued economic stability.

CEC Managing Director Mr. Owen Silavwe said the initiative seeks to engage and empower communities to take an active role in protecting vital infrastructure.

“This campaign is designed to engage and empower the public to report any suspicious activities and collaborate with law enforcement to prevent further theft and vandalism,” Mr. Silavwe said. “The consequences of these crimes extend beyond financial loss; they compromise the safety of workers and the continuity of essential services.”

CEC noted that vandalism and cable theft have far-reaching effects on communities and industries. Disruptions in power supply can halt mining operations, endanger lives, and create economic challenges for both the province and the nation. The company further warned that offenders face harsh penalties, including up to 10 years in prison and life imprisonment if the crimes result in fatalities.

As part of the campaign, CEC is partnering with law enforcement agencies, neighbourhood watch groups, local businesses, and schools to promote awareness and collaboration. Activities will include community events, Q&A sessions, and interactive workshops aimed at fostering a shared sense of responsibility among residents.

“With collective action and community vigilance, we can significantly reduce cases of cable theft and vandalism, ensuring a more stable power supply for all,” CEC said in a statement.

The company has encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities through its toll-free line 5050 on MTN and Zamtel networks
