The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) has called on political parties to take deliberate steps in promoting gender equality by adopting a substantial number of women candidates ahead of the August 13 general elections.
Speaking during the 2026 World YWCA Day commemorations, held under the theme “Forward, Together,” YWCA National President Patricia Ndhlovu emphasized the importance of inclusive political participation. She urged political parties to not only adopt more women candidates but also ensure their representation through proportional representation party lists.
Mrs. Ndhlovu further appealed to voters to turn out in large numbers and support women seeking leadership positions at all levels. She noted that the upcoming elections present an opportunity to challenge the long-standing perception that women do not support one another.
According to her, active participation and solidarity among voters can help reshape the country’s democratic landscape to better reflect the strength, diversity, and potential of women.
“By showing up and standing in solidarity with women candidates, we can begin to change the narrative and build a more inclusive democracy,” she said.
Meanwhile, YWCA Lusaka Branch President Dr. Namasiku Sinkala highlighted the significance of World YWCA Day, describing it as a platform that encourages members to take action within their local communities while remaining connected to the broader global movement.
Dr. Sinkala also stressed the importance of recognizing and reconnecting with past leaders and long-standing partners whose contributions have played a key role in shaping the organization into what it is today.
The YWCA continues to advocate for increased participation of women in leadership and decision-making processes, as part of its broader mission to promote equality and empower women across the country.
