Swala Calls for Greater Mental Health Awareness Following Tragic Loss in Mkushi

Swala, a Zambian organization dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health advocacy, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent death of a 35-year-old woman from Mkushi, who died following a distressing personal situation.

The organization described the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need to address mental health challenges with greater compassion and seriousness.

Speaking on the matter, Executive Director Mary Kufanga emphasized that emotional distress, rejection, and lack of support should never result in the loss of life. She stressed the importance of strengthening support systems and fostering open conversations around mental health.

Mrs. Kufanga also appealed to young women to exercise caution in relationships, urging them to take time to understand the intentions and circumstances of those they trust. While acknowledging that love and hope are natural, she underscored the importance of protecting one’s emotional well-being and future.

She further advised young people that rejection, disappointment, and heartbreak are part of life, but should never lead to self-harm. Instead, she encouraged individuals to seek help and speak out during difficult moments.

Amid rising concerns over suicide cases, Mrs. Kufanga called on clergy, faith-based organizations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to play a more active role in promoting mental health awareness and providing support within communities.

Swala continues to advocate for a collective response to mental health challenges, emphasizing that no one should have to suffer in silence.
