During the official launch of the Gender Impact Assessment Guidelines for Energy Infrastructure Projects in the power sector, Ministry of Energy Director for Energy, Mafayo Ziba, highlighted the sector’s proactive role in mainstreaming gender considerations across its operations.
Speaking on behalf of Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary for Electricity, Arnold Simwaba, Mr. Ziba urged stakeholders to ensure that the newly launched guidelines are fully implemented and translated into tangible outcomes.
And Julia Tomei, visualiser for the Climate Compatible Growth Programme, emphasized that the guidelines will play a critical role in supporting investments in sustainable energy systems by integrating gender considerations into infrastructure planning and development.
She noted that incorporating gender perspectives will enhance project effectiveness and ensure equitable benefits for communities.
Meanwhile, Henry Nkhoma, Director for Gender Development, called on stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to championing gender equality in energy infrastructure projects.
He underscored that inclusive development is key to achieving long-term sustainability in the energy sector and stressed the importance of collective action in implementing the guidelines.
Among those who witnessed the launch were Professor Julia Tomei from the Climate Compatible Growth Programme, Ms. Charlene Bangwe from the British High Commission, and Professor Lloyd Chingambo of Lloyds Financial.
The guidelines were developed with support from the UK government through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Climate Compatible Growth Programme.
The framework supports Zambia’s broader development priorities and international commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals on affordable clean energy, gender equality, and reduced inequalities, helping ensure the country’s energy transition is socially responsive and sustainable.
