DMMU successfully evacuated 54 flood victims from Kamwala area in Lumezi District of Eastern Province

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit, DMMU, has successfully evacuated 54 flood victims from Kamwala area in Lumezi District of Eastern Province, following flooding of the Lundazi River five days ago.

The victims had been stranded across the river while carrying out agricultural activities and were unable to return home due to high water levels.

The evacuation was carried out with support from the Zambia Air Force, whose aircraft made four trips to transport the affected people and their belongings to Chiweza area in Kazembe Ward.

Meanwhile, flooding has left 127 households homeless after their houses collapsed due to heavy rains. The displaced families are currently sheltered at Kazembe Primary School, where DMMU and cooperating partners are providing food and non-food relief items.

Other affected families in villages such as Chimalilo, Saili and Bodola are being accommodated in temporary shelters within their communities.

DMMU has started distributing relief supplies, while a Lundazi businessman, Mr Aliboo, has donated 100 bags of 25-kilogramme mealie meal to support the flood victims.

Preliminary assessments show that the flooding originated upstream in Lundazi District, causing damage to infrastructure, destruction of crop fields, and burial of farmlands under sand.

DMMU says it continues to closely monitor the situation and is working with relevant ministries, the Zambia Air Force, and partners to ensure the safety and welfare of affected communities.
