The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock says arrests were made in Lusaka and Luapula provinces during enforcement operations.
In Kafue District, two suspects were arrested after being found with illegal fishing gear, including mosquito nets measuring about 3,200 metres. The nets were confiscated and the suspects are now facing court proceedings.
Meanwhile, in Luapula Province, 28 cases of non-compliance were recorded in Chienge, Nchelenge, and Samfya districts. Twenty-two offenders from Chienge and Samfya are appearing before the Magistrate’s Court, while six from Nchelenge were warned and cautioned. Confiscated items include mosquito nets and mono-filament nets.
The Ministry has reminded fishing communities that the annual fishing ban is a statutory measure aimed at allowing fish stocks to breed and replenish.
