Lusaka — President Hakainde Hichilema has directed the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security to launch a nationwide operation to recover all illegal firearms, citing rising incidents of thuggery and politically motivated violence.
Speaking during a press conference at State House on Tuesday, President Hichilema said no political cadre—whether from the ruling UPND, the opposition PF, or any other group—will be permitted to engage in acts of violence. He stressed that the rule of law must prevail regardless of political affiliation.
“There will be no cadre allowed to promote violence in this country,” President Hichilema said, adding that law enforcement agencies must act firmly and impartially in restoring order.
Questions CSOs’ Approach to Constitution Reform
The President also expressed concern over some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) that did not make submissions during the constitutional amendment consultation period but are now opting to protest instead of pursuing dialogue.
He urged CSOs and stakeholders to prioritise engagement, saying his administration remains open to constructive discussion on the reform process.
“There is no need for people to go on the streets and demonstrate over the constitution-making process,” he said. “My door is open for dialogue.”
Assures Resolution of Load Shedding Crisis
President Hichilema acknowledged public frustration over the ongoing load shedding, stating that Zambians have a right to complain as the power crisis has affected all sectors of society.
He, however, assured the nation that government interventions currently underway will fully resolve the electricity shortage within three years.
