United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka Provincial Chairperson, Obvious Mwaliteta, has questioned the competence of the Copperbelt Police Command, accusing it of failing to adequately protect President Hakainde Hichilema during his recent visit to Chingola.
Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka, Mr. Mwaliteta
called for the immediate resignation of Copperbelt Police command and police in charge of Chingola on
moral grounds, saying law enforcement officers had failed to maintain order and
safeguard the Head of State.
His remarks follow a violent incident on Saturday, when
unruly residents of Chingola allegedly hurled stones at President Hichilema
while he addressed a gathering at Chiwenpala Market.
Mr. Mwaliteta urged law enforcement agencies to upgrade
charges against those arrested from arson to treason, arguing that attacking
the President constitutes a serious threat to national security.
He added that UPND youths in Lusaka are frustrated with what
they perceive as the slow pace of investigations, demanding swift and decisive
action from the police.
Mr. Mwaliteta further alleged that the violence might have
been orchestrated with the support of opposition elements and called for the
arrest of any Jerabo members found at Senseli Mine, claiming they were
responsible for much of the unrest at Chiwenpala Market.
Police have since arrested 13 individuals in connection with
the violence in Chingola. Investigations are ongoing.
