Republican Progressive Party (RPP) President Leslie Chikuse has expressed concern over what he described as the politicization of the death of Zambia’s sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
Speaking at a press
briefing in Lusaka, Mr. Chikuse said it was “unfortunate and painful” that the
late president has not yet been laid to rest due to what he termed as political
maneuvering by certain individuals.
Mr. Chikuse criticized
unnamed politicians for allegedly using the situation as a campaign tool,
warning that such actions dishonor the legacy of the late president and
undermine national unity during a time of mourning.
“This is a time for
solemnity and respect, not political games,” he stated.
He further addressed
circulating allegations that the government is secretly investigating the
circumstances surrounding Mr. Lungu’s death.
Mr. Chikuse argued that
such claims, whether substantiated or not, should not delay the burial of the
former head of state. “Investigations, if necessary, can proceed without
holding the nation’s grief hostage,” he said.
In a notable shift from
criticism to commendation, Mr. Chikuse also took time to praise President
Hakainde Hichilema for several key developmental strides.
He highlighted the increase in the Constituency Development
Fund (CDF), the implementation
of the Free Education Policy, and the recent export of Zambian beef to the Democratic Republic of Congo
as signs of tangible progress under the current administration.
“These are commendable
achievements that show the government is working to uplift the lives of
ordinary Zambians,” Mr. Chikuse noted, urging political leaders to focus on
development rather than division.
The late President Lungu
passed away on June 5, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in Pretoria,
South Africa.
His death has drawn
tributes from across the political spectrum and the region, with President
Hichilema calling for unity and compassion during this period of national
mourning.
