HIV Prevention Summit Kicks Off in Lusaka

Lusaka, Zambia – The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC), UNAIDS, and UNFPA, has opened a three-day HIV Prevention Summit aimed at accelerating, sustaining, and innovating HIV prevention efforts across the country.

The summit, themed “Accelerating, Sustaining, and Innovating HIV Prevention in a Rapidly Changing Global Landscape,” has brought together key stakeholders to discuss emerging strategies and approaches to strengthen the national HIV response.

UNFPA Country Representative, Seth Broekman, emphasized the need to integrate Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), HIV, and sexual gender-based violence services to better serve vulnerable populations. He noted that HIV and SRHR are closely connected, and addressing them separately creates barriers for those most in need.

National AIDS Council (NAC) Director General, Kebby Musokotwane, said Zambia has made significant progress in reducing new HIV infections and expanding access to treatment. However, he cautioned that challenges such as funding uncertainties and persistent inequalities continue to hinder the country’s efforts.

The summit focuses on strengthening community-led models, promoting digital and data-driven innovations, and expanding access to combination prevention methods to ensure equitable and responsive HIV prevention services for all Zambians.

The event forms part of Zambia’s buildup to World AIDS Day on December 1, 2025, reinforcing the country’s commitment to leadership, solidarity, and accountability in the fight against HIV.
