The government has urged
the Zambia National Service (ZNS), the contractor handling drainage
construction works in Kanyama Constituency, to expedite the project ahead of
the upcoming rainy season.
According to
government officials, the drainage construction works have reached 60 percent
completion, with assurances that the project will be completed with the right
quality and standards to provide a lasting solution to flooding in the area.
Disaster Management
and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) Coordinator, Norman Chipakupaku, confirmed that
government has already released K99 million to facilitate the completion of the
ongoing works.
“The government has made
available sufficient funds to ensure these drainage projects are completed
before the rains intensify,” Mr. Chipakupaku said.
The government has
also appealed to Kanyama residents to take responsibility for maintaining the
drainage systems by avoiding littering and regularly cleaning the drains to
prevent blockages that contribute to flooding.
Meanwhile, Dr.
Pollen, a representative from the local leadership, commended community
champions who have voluntarily taken it upon themselves to clean sections of
the drainage systems.
“We are encouraged
by the commitment of community members who are working tirelessly to keep the
drains clear,” Dr. Pollen noted.
And Kanyama Member of
Parliament, Monty Chinkuli, expressed optimism that key sections of the
drainage works will be completed before the rainy season begins, helping to
mitigate the area’s perennial flooding problem.
“We are hopeful
that before the heavy rains start, most of the critical works will be done to
protect residents from floods,” Mr. Chinkuli said.
The Kanyama
drainage project is part of a broader government initiative to improve urban water
management infrastructure and reduce the risk of flood-related disasters in
Lusaka’s flood-prone areas.
