The National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC) is collaborating with the Ministry of Education and other government agencies to bolster the school feeding program, aiming to improve learner attendance and nutrition across the country.
Executive Director of the NFNC, Mathews Muhuru, emphasized that the program’s primary goal is to encourage more children to attend school by providing nutritious meals.
“The school feeding program is not just about feeding children; it is about ensuring they stay in school and receive the nutrition they need to learn and grow,” he said.
In 2026, the Ministry of Education has allocated over fifty million kwacha to introduce milk into school meals, marking a significant step in improving dietary quality for learners.
Additionally, the Ministry is piloting the inclusion of eggs in the program, further enhancing protein intake for students.
Mr. Muhuru expressed optimism about these initiatives, highlighting the broader impact on the country’s nutrition agenda.
“We are very happy because this guidance shows different sectors how they can improve nutrition and contribute to the positive outcomes our country aspires to achieve,” he said.
With these new additions, the school feeding program is poised to make a stronger impact on both education and health, ensuring that Zambian children receive the nourishment they need to thrive.
