ZRA Intercepts Smuggled Cigarettes Worth K7.8 Million in Lusaka Operation

Lusaka, Zambia — The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has intercepted 800 cases of smuggled Vikings cigarettes, preventing an estimated K7.8 million in lost government revenue following a high-level intelligence-led operation.

According to ZRA, the cigarettes were transported on a truck bearing registration LZ 46 TN GP, which entered the country from South Africa. The consignment had been falsely declared as assorted household goods allegedly in transit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through the Chirundu border post.

Acting on intelligence information, ZRA officers closely monitored and trailed the truck to a warehouse located in Garden House, Lusaka, where the cargo was scheduled to be offloaded. A subsequent search of the warehouse revealed large quantities of cigarettes concealed within the shipment.

Following the discovery, the warehouse was immediately sealed, and both the truck and the smuggled goods were seized by authorities.

ZRA has reiterated its warning to smugglers, emphasizing that those involved in illegal trade face seizure, forfeiture, and possible prosecution under Zambian law. The Authority has also urged importers and clearing agents to make accurate and truthful declarations to avoid penalties.
