Lilongwe, Malawi — The Zambia national women’s football team, the Copper Queens, have been crowned champions of the Nations Women’s Tournament after an impressive 3–1 victory over Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors in the final match held at Bingu Stadium in Lilongwe.
Zambia opened the tournament with a hard-fought 1–1 draw against hosts Malawi, setting the tone for a competitive campaign. The Copper Queens grew stronger with each match, displaying cohesion, discipline, and attacking flair that ultimately secured them the title.
One of the tournament's brightest stars was Enelesi Phiri, who delivered standout performances throughout the competition. Phiri scored two goals across Zambia’s matches and added a crucial assist, earning her the Top Scorer award.
Team captain Racheal Kundananji was also recognized for her exceptional leadership and influence on the pitch. Her dynamic play and consistency earned her the prestigious Best Player of the Tournament honor.
Meanwhile, both Malawi and Zambia view the competition as a vital part of their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26 next year. Coaches from both sides emphasized the importance of high-level regional competition as they fine-tune their squads for continental glory.
For Zambia, the victory not only boosts morale but also sends a strong message ahead of WAFCON: the Copper Queens remain a force to be reckoned with in African women’s football.
