LUSAKA — Zambia is set to become a trading hub for electricity in the Southern African region, Energy Minister Makozo Chikote has said, citing ongoing government initiatives to address the country’s power deficit.
Speaking
at the launch of GreenCo Power Services Limited’s new solar-powered office in
Lusaka last night, Mr. Chikote said significant improvements in power
availability are expected in the lead-up to the elections, thanks to ongoing
projects with the private sector.
“President
Hakainde Hichilema has directed me to focus on addressing the power deficit in
the country rather than traveling abroad, and we are working closely with
private companies to achieve this,” he said.
Mr.
Chikote commended GreenCo Power Services Limited for its contribution to power
generation and imports, noting that Zambia is moving in the right direction due
to sound government policies.
Africa
GreenCo Group Chief Executive Officer Ana Hajduka praised the government for
its leadership and business-friendly approach in the energy sector.
Meanwhile,
GreenCo Power Company Managing Director Wezi Gondwe highlighted the launch of
the solar-powered office as a reflection of the company’s commitment to clean
energy innovation, regional power integration, and private-sector driven
solutions for sustainable energy security.
“We
commend the Ministry of Energy for championing open access, which enables
private sector participation and promotes long-term energy sustainability,” Mr.
Gondwe said.
The
launch is part of Zambia’s broader push to diversify its energy sources,
integrate renewable solutions, and position the country as a regional power
player in Southern Africa.
