Government Warns AMR Claims 1.3 Million Lives Globally

 


Government says Antimicrobial Resistance accounts for at least 1.3 million deaths worldwide.

‎Speaking in Mansa of Luapula province during the Commemoration of the 2025 World Antimicrobial Awareness Week , Provincial Permanent Secretary Prudence mwansa said misuse of antibiotics in both human and animals has resulted in the loss of so many lives.

‎Mrs Mwansa said as a precautionary measure, government has through the Ministry of Health embarked on implementing the antimicrobial resistance stewardship programs in selected communities in the area.

‎Mrs Mwansa said government working closely with other stakeholders has also started recording a steady reduction in the number of antimicrobial resistance cases.

‎Meanwhile, the British government says it stands ready to provide ongoing fiscal support toward the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

‎‎British High Commissioner to Zambia  Rebecca Terzeon says antimicrobial resistance is a global health threat that needs concerted efforts.

Earlier, Zambia National Public Health Institute director general Roma Chilengi said antimicrobial resistance puts a strain on the national treasury.

‎Professor Chilengi has emphasized the need to accelerate community sensitization on the dangers of self- prescription.

‎Prof. Chilengi who is also Presidential Advisor on Health has advised citizens against self medication as it is said to be among the major leading causes of death.

‎The commemoration which was held under the theme " Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future" was preceded by a match past and characterized by awards giving ceremony with Mansa General Hospital scooping the Overall Best Performing facility while Chipata Central Hospital emerged second  best only after Livingstone Teaching Hospital which took the first place.
