Zambia to Participate in 2026 Global Eye Health Summit

Lusaka, October 23, 2025 — The Government of Zambia has announced that the country will actively participate in the upcoming International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) Global Summit on Eye Health, scheduled to take place on September 26 next year in the Caribbean.

Speaking during the Orbis Eye Health Cooperating Partners Advocacy Meeting held today, Health Minister Elijah Muchima said the summit presents a valuable opportunity for Zambia to showcase its progress in promoting eye health, exchange knowledge with global experts, and strengthen partnerships aimed at eliminating avoidable blindness and visual impairment.

Dr. Muchima emphasized that while Zambia continues to make strides in improving access to eye care services, significant challenges remain — including inadequate human resources, poor infrastructure, and limited sustainable financing within the sector.

“We have made commendable progress in promoting eye health, but there is still much to be done,” Dr. Muchima said. “Overcoming the remaining barriers will require renewed collaboration and commitment from all stakeholders in the health sector.”

Meanwhile, Orbis Zambia Country Director Lucia Mvula highlighted that the upcoming IAPB Global Summit will convene global leaders and experts to discuss strategies for advancing eye health and scaling up interventions worldwide.

“This summit offers a unique platform for countries like Zambia to contribute to the global agenda on vision care and learn from best practices that can transform local eye health systems,” Ms. Mvula noted.

The IAPB Global Summit is one of the world’s leading gatherings on vision and eye health, focusing on collaborative action to prevent blindness and improve access to quality eye care services across all regions.
