ECZ Extends Accreditation Period For Political
Parties, Records Over 284,000 New Voter Registrations
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has extended the accreditation period for political parties to 31st October 2025, allowing their observers to continue participating in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise.
ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis announced the extension during a press briefing in Lusaka, stating that the decision follows requests from political parties seeking additional time to complete the accreditation process.
Mrs. Zaloumis explained that stakeholders can apply through their respective District Registration Officers and are permitted to submit a maximum of three observers per constituency.
“We have extended the accreditation period to give political parties ample time to organize their observers. However, it is too early for anyone to call for an extension of the voter registration exercise itself. Any such decision will be guided by data and operational realities,” Mrs. Zaloumis said.
Meanwhile, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro revealed that the Commission has so far registered over 259,000 new voters and recorded 284,000 updates and transfers since the exercise began earlier this month.
Mr. Kasaro stated that these figures reflect progress from Phases One and Two of the registration exercise, adding that Phase Four will commence tomorrow, Tuesday, 28th October 2025, following the completion of Phase Three.
In a detailed update, Mrs. Zaloumis disclosed that the ECZ had captured a total of 284,513 new voter registrations during Phases One and Two of the exercise.
Of the 343,921 provisional voters captured during Phase Two, 163,581 were new registrations while 180,340 were updates. Among the new registrants, 89,905 are female and 73,676 are male.
The Copperbelt Province recorded the highest number of new registrations at 31,972, comprising 19,774 females and 12,198 males, while Muchinga Province recorded the lowest with 8,194 new voters (4,219 females and 3,975 males).
Other provincial figures include:
• Central Province: 20,700 (9,538 males, 11,161 females)
• Eastern Province: 30,942 (13,328 males, 17,614 females)
• Northern Province: 20,954 (10,300 males, 10,654 females)
• North-Western Province: 19,243 (9,195 males, 10,048 females)
• Southern Province: 31,099 (14,359 males, 16,857 females)
• Western Province: 24,770 (10,411 males, 14,359 females)
Mrs. Zaloumis reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, inclusive, and credible voter registration process, urging citizens who have not yet registered to do so before the exercise concludes.
“We are pleased with the progress so far, but we continue to encourage eligible citizens to take advantage of this opportunity to register and verify their details,” she said.
The ECZ is expected to announce the Phase Three results in the coming days.
