President Duma Boko Urges Farmers to Embrace Innovation Amid Climate Change Challenges
Lusaka, Zambia — Botswana President Duma Boko has called on farmers across Southern Africa to embrace resilience and innovation as the region faces the mounting effects of climate change.
Speaking at the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show in Lusaka, held under the theme “Adapting to Climate Change,” President Boko emphasized the importance of adopting conservation farming, agroforestry, and renewable energy integration to safeguard soil health, boost yields, and ensure long-term food security.
“Our approach to agriculture must now include climate-smart practices, modern irrigation, and water harvesting technologies,” President Boko said. “We must build systems that can withstand the harsh realities of a changing climate.”
He further urged regional cooperation to develop export-oriented agricultural economies capable of unlocking intra-African trade opportunities and reducing dependency on imports.
In a symbolic gesture of regional partnership, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema presented President Boko with a donation of 250 bags of urea fertilizer, 250 bags of basal fertilizer, and 1,200 kilograms of seed maize.
Meanwhile, Agricultural and Commercial Cooperative Society of Zambia Limited President Bernard Moonga revealed that this year’s show attracted participation from 24 foreign countries and hosted 1,995 exhibitors, underscoring the event’s growing international significance.
The 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show continues to serve as a vital platform for regional collaboration, innovation, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices in the face of climate uncertainty.
